What are word searches?

A word search is a word game that is composed of letters in a grid (usually in a rectangular or square shape). Within these letters are hidden words. The objective of word searches is to find all the hidden words in the grid of letters. One found, these hidden words are circled or crossed through in the puzzle.

The words may be hidden in any direction: horizontally, vertically, diagonally, forwards and backwards.

What are the differences between word searches for kids and adults?

Word searches for kids nearly always include the list of hidden words. They don’t have as many letters in the grid and the list of hidden words is relatively short.

What are the benefits of word searches for kids?

Word searches for kids are often used as educational tools.

Searching for a word, letter by letter, helps kids learn new words and how to spell them.

Most word searches have a theme to which all the hidden words are related. Searching for the words in the maze helps the children memorize the words related to the theme.

How do you find the hidden words?

The most common strategy for finding all the words in a word search puzzle is to go through the puzzle from one side to the other and look for the first letter of the hidden word. Once you find the first letter, you look at the surrounding letters to see if the next letter appears. If it does you continue until you find the entire hidden word. If not, continue looking for the first letter.

Secret messages or words

Some of our word searches for kids contain a secret message or a secret word not included in the word list. These puzzles are usually intended for older kids and you will find the secret message or word on the site.

Other word searches contain a trivia question or selection of questions. The answer is found in the word maze. Beware! The more advanced versions also contain wrong answers which are also hidden in the word search for kids.
